>>   The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India, has notified the Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules, 2016. As per the rules, bio-medical waste means any waste generated during the diagnosis, treatment, or immunization of human beings or animals, or during research activities related thereto, or in the production or testing of biologicals, or in health camps.

The bio-medical waste generator and the operator of the common bio-medical waste treatment and disposal facility (CBWTF) are responsible for the safe handling and disposal of such waste. The State Government (Health Department) shall ensure the implementation of the rules in all health care facilities.

The State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) shall issue authorization to the health care facilities & CBWTFs and monitor compliance with the provisions of the rules. TNPCB has so far authorized 31082 Private and Government hospitals in the State under the rules. All these hospitals have made agreement with the CBWTF for the collection, transportation, treatment and scientific disposal of the biomedical waste.

The CBWTF is required to treat the waste in accordance with the Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules, 2016, and as per the authorization granted by the TNPCB. Each CBWTF is equipped with treatment systems such as incineration, autoclaving, chemical disinfection, shredder, sharp pit/encapsulation etc. In Tamil Nadu, 11 CBWTFs are in operation, collectively handling 60.7 Tonnes of bio-medical waste generated across the State on a daily basis.
