Air
Air quality is a measure of the suitability of air for breathing by people, plants, and animals. On average, a person inhales about 14,000 litres of air every day. Therefore, poor air quality may affect the quality of life now and for future generations by affecting health, the environment, the economy, and the city’s livability.
The objectives of air quality standards are:
- To indicate the levels of air quality necessary with an adequate margin of safety to protect the public health, vegetation, and property;
- To assist in establishing priorities for abatement and control of pollutant levels;
- To provide a uniform yardstick for assessing air quality at the national level;
- To indicate the need and extent of monitoring programmes.
